Alumnae of the Year:
This award of highest honor is given to an alumna who has contributed significantly to her community and enriched the lives of those around her. As a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, her outstanding accomplishments bring distinction to the school and the strong foundation it fosters in young women.
Doris Boland Jones has been a part of the Ursuline Campus since she attended Sacred Heart Model School as a kindergartener. She graduated from SHMS in 1945 and from Sacred Heart Academy in 1949. While a student at Sacred Heart Academy, Jones played field hockey and was responsible for starting the “100 Club” (spirit club), which continues today. Jones maintained her spirited support of Sacred Heart Academy during the years her four daughters and two granddaughters attended the school. The past six years, Jones has been the co-chair of the Ursuline United Capital Campaign, helping to raise $9.55 million for the benefit of the Sacred Heart Schools community, which includes Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart Model School, Sacred Heart Preschool and Sacred Heart School for the Arts.
Jones has been a loving and supportive wife to her husband, Robert, and has raised seven children. Throughout these stages in her life she has managed to continue to work on her own growth and has lived an example of a life of giving to others. “She has taught her children the value of humble service to those in need and the value of the fundamentals of giving first,” said her son, Boland Jones. Son Robert, Jr. added, “Even more impressive to me is the way our mother has always taken the forgotten under her wing – single or widowed relatives and elderly community residents – to make sure in a hundred small ways that those people know that they are part of a community and that there is someone who cares.”
Colleen Jones Underhill said Jones displays the Ursuline Core Values of leadership, reverence, community and service everyday in her life. “She lives out these values with confidence, positive energy and love like no other person I know….She is truly the example of what educating the whole person personifies.”
Heart Award Winners
Heart Awards are given to graduates or persons who have contributed in a significant way to the SHA community.
Ann Amorose (current parent) has been a great asset to Sacred Heart Academy during the four years her daughter, Christina, has attended the school. Amorose manages all aspects of the first-class Apple Tournament program, including soliciting ads and coordinating printing. For three years, she has been the editor of the Parents’ Association newsletter, Heart of the Matter. In this role, Amorose solicits articles, designs the newsletter and coordinates printing. As a parent, Amorose is active with the field hockey team, never missing one of her daughter’s games and being a part of the traveling team.
Janet Floore (current parent) gives her time and talent to the Sacred Heart Academy Madrigals and Acappella. She assists in all ways imaginable, including fixing costumes, helping with hair and makeup, helping backstage, and even keeping a glass of Diet Coke available for choir director, Jill Schurman. Floore also hosts the annual Madrigal overnight retreat in her home. She chaperones the Madrigals and Acappella choirs on out of town trips and helps organize fund raising events for the groups.
Honorary Diploma Recipients
This award is presented to a non-graduate whose devotion to Sacred Heart Academy is equal to completing the requirements for a diploma.
Jean Thornbury (joining the class of 1968) was only able to attend Sacred Heart Academy on a half-time schedule through 1969 due to cerebral palsy-related complications. She finished her course work under the tutelage of retired teachers and was able to complete her GED. Thornbury’s dream, however, was to receive a Sacred Heart Academy diploma. Today, she remains devoted to the school and to the class of 1968. Thornbury has worked as a clerk in the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office since 1993.
Patricia Wathen (SHA faculty) has been a full time member of the Sacred Heart Academy religious department since 1979 and is the current department chair. She also teaches the International Baccalaureate class, Theory of Knowledge. In addition to her faculty duties, which have included planning retreats and liturgies, Wathen always exhibits a cheerful presence, competence, faith-filled dedication, creative and delightful classroom activities, and good judgment. Wathen’s two daughters are graduates of Sacred Heart Academy.
