Creating music provides students of all ages with a means of self-expression. Music performance also helps students of all ages conquer fears and to take risks. Regardless of one’s level of experience or age, creating music builds self esteem. The study of music has significant cognitive benefits as well. Music students out-perform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math. Musical performances foster skills in reading, memory, listening, forecasting, recall and concentration – skills also critical in academics.
