Administrative Services | Mary Newton- Office Assistant Mary Newton, an accomplished professional artist/educator, has been teaching drawing and painting classes for adults at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 2007. She believes in a relaxed and nurturing approach to teaching. From 1990 to 2002, she taught painting and drawing at the University of Louisville, including Paris, France through their overseas program. Ms. Newton earned her master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Cincinnati. Her work has been exhibited at various museums and galleries throughout the country, and has been featured in New American Paintings and the Christian Science Journal. She is a two-time recipient of the Al Smith Fellowship in painting from the Kentucky Arts Council. In 2009, Ms. Newton received a full fellowship to the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. | Emily Trujillo- Office Manager Emily is a graduate of the University of Kentucky’s arts administration program with an emphasis in vocal performance. She participated in the University of Kentucky Women’s Choir from 2006-2009, the University of Kentucky Choristers from 2007-2009, and the University of Kentucky BlueNote from 2008-2010. Her junior year of college she worked as the marketing and public relations intern for the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Emily is the co-founder of the University of Kentucky’s improvisational group SkittyKats. | Dance Faculty |  | Fabiana Fadlala-Poulis- Ballet Born in Paraguay and raised in Argentina, Ms. Fadlala-Poulis received her training at Estudio Coreografico Bonnin, Teatro Colon and received her master’s degree in ballet pedagogy from the National Ballet of Cuba. She studied under Olga Ferri, Miguel Bonnin, Ileana Balmori and Raul Candal. Ms. Fadlala-Poulis danced professionally with the Teatro Municipal de Asuncion, Teatro General San Martin, Teatro Colon, Ballet Arlington and Ballet Concerto. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Ms. Fadlala-Poulis taught for eight years at prestigious schools such as Margo Dean School of Ballet and Ballet Conservatory in Lewisville, Texas. She served as assistant director of Lake Cities Ballet Theatre II. In Arizona, she was the outreach coordinator for the Desert Youth Ballet Foundation and taught for Arizona School of Classical Ballet and Tempe Dance Academy. Her choreography for YAGP, “It’s a Good Day,” placed 2nd in regional’s and was performed in the finals in New York. Most recently she worked as a ballet instructor at the Louisville Ballet School and as a ballet mistress of the Louisville Ballet Youth Ensemble. | Robin Franck-Schulman- Creative Movement, PreBallet, Jazz, Tap Robin Franck-Schulman is thrilled to return to the Ursuline Campus after graduating from Sacred Heart Academy. She brings a world of knowledge and experience in all forms of dance and musical theater. She has trained with renowned choreographers such as Gus Giordano and Joe Tremaine as well as the late Tommy Sutton. Ms. Franck-Schulman previously performed and choreographed many seasons with Iroquois Park Players and Music Theater Louisville in shows such as, “Guys and Dolls,” “West Side Story,” “Grease,” “Hello Dolly,” “Annie,” and “Big River.” She also performed with her daughters in “Oklahoma” and “A Chorus Line” with Centerstage. Ms. Franck-Schulman was the owner and director of a successful studio in Louisville, known as the Dance Connection, for nine years. She is currently a state certified creative movement specialist and offers professional development workshops for pre-school and elementary staff and has taught at the Temple Trager ECEC pre-school as their creative movement specialist for 18 years. | Amanda Johnson- Pilates, Modern Dance |  | Julie McWilliams- Chair of Dance Department, Ballet Instructor Julianne McWilliams
Julianne McWilliams is chair of the dance department. She has served as a ballet instructor and choreographer at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 1998. Ms. McWilliams brings a wealth of experience, having been a principal professional dancer with the Lexington Ballet and a member of the Louisville Ballet Civic Company. From 1993-1998, Ms. McWilliams co-owned and directed the A.R.T. Centre, a private dance studio in Louisville.
| Stephanie Pence- | Lauren Zoeller- Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Modern Dance Lauren Zoeller is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. She began dance at the age of six. Ms. Zoeller is a graduate of the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) where she received a degree in dance and a minor in musical theater. She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign - Urbana to pursue a degree in modern dance. While living in Champaign, Ms. Zoeller studied at some of the greatest dance companies in the nation, including Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Bill T. Jones and Cunningham Dance Company. Ms. Zoeller returned to Louisville and enrolled in Bellarmine University, earning a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and jazz studies.
While studying at Bellarmine, Ms. Zoeller remained true to her desire to be an entertainer. She continues to perform and choreograph regularly with several modern dance companies in the Louisville area, including Moving Collective, Jan Street Dance Theatre and Contemporary Dance Louisville.
Ms. Zoeller recently signed a recording contract in Nashville, Tennessee with the Tyler Music Group. Her producer is William Smith and her manager is Michelle Robertson. Together the team produced Ms. Zoeller’s first CD, entitled "Something to Say."
| Drama Faculty | Loren Crawford- Sacred Heart Model School Drama Integration | Trina Fischer- Fairy Tale Theatre, SHMS K-2 integration classes Trina Fischer is the public relations and marketing director of the local artist-run ensemble theatre company Looking for Lilith, which re-examines history from women's perspectives and creates and produces original plays.
A YPAS grad, Ms. Fischer received a bachelor’s degree in performance studies with a minor in Latin American studies from Northwestern University. After graduating, she spent a year in Chile studying and teaching acting on a Fulbright.
Ms. Fischer apprenticed at Actors Theatre of Louisville before moving to New York City to act and teach for six years. She also worked as a teaching artist with the Early Learning Through the Arts Team at CUNY's Creative Arts Team, exploring social justice issues and developing literacy skills through interactive drama curriculum with 3-7 year olds. Ms. Fischer is a certified instructor in Alba Emoting (TM), a psycho physiological emotional induction technique used in theatre, therapy and other areas.
With Looking for Lilith she has helped create, produce and/or performed in all of its original works, including producing and performing in their tours, and has participated in their Faith Stories Project in Guatemala. She is a proud member of Alternate ROOTS: an organization, based in the Southern U.S., of artists committed to eliminating oppression in all its forms.
| Gerald Kean- Technical & Scenic Design Director Gerald Kean is the Sacred Heart School for the Arts technical and scenic director. He is also director of the Ursuline Arts Center. Mr. Kean has extensive experience working in set production in television, video and theater. He started in the entertainment industry as a set dresser on the ABC mini-series, Innocent Victims. He also worked on the FX series, Beyond Belief, before returning to Kentucky. Mr. Kean’s set designs can also be seen at the Stephen Foster Drama Association or on tour with the Blue Apple Players. Mr. Kean has been with SHSA since 1995. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Francesconi Award of Integrity, the highest honor bestowed on an employee of Sacred Heart Schools. |  | Michelle Ludwig- Chair of Drama Department, Intermediate Drama, Youth Drama, Broadway Bound, Sacred Heart Academy Arts Integration Michelle Ludwig joins the Sacred Heart School for the Arts faculty with over 20 years of experience as a theatre educator, administrator, director, and performer. She is chair of the Drama Department and teaches Intermediate Drama, Youth Drama and Broadway Bound, in addition to being a part of the Sacred Heart Academy Arts Integration program. Before moving back to Louisville in 2011, she served for seven years as director of theatre at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. Earlier in her career while still living in Kentucky, Ms. Ludwig was a drama teacher at Louisville Collegiate School, drama department chair at the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts, and the education director at Stage One where she was also a member of the acting company. Ms. Ludwig has also taught, directed and acted in her home state of Nebraska and North Carolina. A member of Actor's Equity, she earned her master’s degree in drama/theatre for youth from the University of Texas at Austin. She is delighted to be back in her old Kentucky home and to be sharing her passion for theatre with the Sacred Heart community. |  | Mary Ann Mattingly- Accompanist, Drama Department Mary Ann Mattingly joined Sacred Heart School for the Arts in 2008 as the accompanist for the drama department. She earned her bachelor’s degree in piano pedagogy from the University of Louisville. She served as a staff accompanist for the U of L School of Music vocal students during their lessons and recitals. Ms. Mattingly has also accompanied for Blue Apple Players and maintains a busy playing schedule at churches and private parties. In addition to Sacred Heart School for the Arts, Ms. Mattingly is also the pianist/organist at the Nazareth Home in Louisville. She is known for her sensitive playing and supportive, encouraging manner with students. |  | Megan McKinney- Costumer Megan McKinney is the Sacred Heart School for the Arts costumer. She has master’s degree in theatrical design (costume and set design) from the University of Louisville. As a scenic artist at the Clarence Brown Theatre of the University of Tennessee, where Ms. McKinney received a bachelor’s degree in theatre, she discovered a passion for designing and constructing costumes. Her work includes designs for “Interrogating the Nude,” “Angels in America,” “Cage Rhythm,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Who Pushed Humpty,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” and “Merrily We Roll Along.” Ms. McKinney is very excited to be working with the students, parents, and staff of Sacred Heart School for the Arts. | Jacqueline Thompson- Beginning Drama |  | Miguel Walker- Intermediate Drama, Youth Drama, Sacred Heart Model School Arts Integration, Sacred Heart Academy Arts Integration Assistant Miguel Walker is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in theatre and has worked with Actors Theatre of Louisville, Stage One, Bunbury and Finnegan productions. He trained in Linklater voice with Dru Pilmer. Mr. Walker created and led his own acting classes in AREA (Atlanta's Resource for Entertainment and the Arts) as well as worked as an actor in short film and the 2010 comedic saga Drop Dead Diva in Atlanta Georgia. | Music Faculty | Andrea Bernson- Piano Andrea Bernson has been teaching piano for more than 30 years. She has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and frequently serves as an adjudicator for music competitions.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Ms. Bernson attended West Chester University as an undergraduate and earned her master’s degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She has served on the faculties of Northern Virginia Community College; Rhodes College and Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee; the University of Louisville; and Indiana University Southeast.
Ms. Bernson was executive director of the Arts Council of Southern Indiana for 15 years. Under her leadership the Arts Council became a regional organization serving six counties. In this position, she created many programs, awards, and scholarships that benefitted thousands of students in Southern Indiana.
From being a radio announcer on public radio to teaching, performing, and arts administration, Ms. Bernson’s career has spanned several areas of the arts. She is a graduate of Leadership Southern Indiana and has been a member of the Board of Greater Louisville Music Teachers Association and the Indiana Association of Local Arts Agencies. She has served as vice president of New Albany Rotary Club. Ms. Bernson received the Woman of Achievement Award from the New Albany Business and Professional Women Organization in 1999.
| Rachel Blanton- Violin Rachel Blanton has been teaching violin at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 2000 and spearheaded the development of its strings program. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Louisville. Ms. Blanton has also completed teacher training courses with the Suzuki Violin Foundation. In addition to teaching, Ms. Blanton is active in the Louisville area as a performer, playing with Irish bands and Bourbon Baroque, a period-instrument ensemble co-founded and directed by fellow faculty member Austin Clark. | Dr. Laura Chipe- Voice, Kindermusik Dr. Laura Hammack Chipe has been at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 2007 and brings over 35 years of expertise to our music program where she teaches voice, Kindermusik classes, and our Arts Integration music classes at Sacred Heart Preschool. She is also vocal director of the Drama Department. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Georgetown College. She earned a master’s degree in church music a doctorate in musical arts from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Chipe was assistant professor of music at the University of the Cumberlands from 1997 to 2007, where she taught music appreciation, school music for elementary education majors, and applied voice. She directed the opera workshop at the university and served as the conductor of the hand bell choir, women’s chorus and youth chorale, a community children’s choir she founded in 1998.
Dr. Chipe lived and taught in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 14 years. She sang with the Brazilian National Opera, studied voice with renowned Brazilian professionals and taught at the American School of Rio and Our Lady of Mercy School of Rio. As a singer, Dr. Chipe concertized in Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, and Natal. She also appeared as the lead in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, H.M.S. Pinafore, Gondoliers, and Pirates of Penzance.
She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors, Choristers Guild, and Orff Society.
| Shawn Eaton- Voice, Piano Shawn Eaton has been teaching voice and piano at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 2007. He earned his master’s degree in church music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he was the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship. A tenor soloist, Mr. Eaton is currently working on his doctorate in voice at Southern Seminary. He is also an accomplished choral and instrumental director and accompanist. In Louisville, Mr. Eaton has taught voice at the Louisville Academy of Music and piano at Flying Hands Music Studio. He loves working with young people and is thrilled to be part of the Sacred Heart School for the Arts music program. | Joshua Faith- Director of Instrumental Ensembles & Clarinet Josh Faith joined Sacred Heart School for the Arts in 2005. He is the founding director/conductor of the Sacred Heart School for the Arts instrumental ensemble and the Sacred Heart Model School beginning band program. He is also a clarinet instructor at SHSA. Mr. Faith holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Indiana University Southeast, where his primary instructors were Donald McMahel (conducting) and Ernie Gross (clarinet). In addition to teaching at SHSA, Josh is the assistant band director at New Albany High School and he teaches at the Indiana University Southeast Arts Institute. He is a founding member of Samavayah, a group that performs kirtan music, a tradition of Hindu folk music from India. |  | Grace KIm- Piano, Strings, Voice Grace Kim teaches piano, voice and all string instruments. She joined Sacred Heart School for the Arts in 2004. Ms. Kim earned her bachelor’s degree in music from Chong-Shin University in Seoul, South Korea and her master’s degree in church music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has been a music minister and soloist for several churches in California, Kentucky, and Uzbekistan, where she served as a missionary for five years. Ms. Kim is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Music and Music Educators National Conference, and is certified in Kindermusik. Ms. Kim serves as director of orchestra at Stuart Middle School in the Jefferson County Public School System and as music minister at Audubon Park United Methodist Church. Music is an integral part of her life and she hopes to touch everyone she comes in contact with the power of music. |  | Don Leffler- Guitar, Banjo Don Leffler has been teaching guitar at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 2004 and has been a professional musician for more than 40 years. He is a member of the Louisville Federation of Musicians. Mr. Leffler has written a guitar text and scored a musical presentation for an industrial company. Mr. Leffler is also an accomplished banjo instructor. | Laura Meyer- Piano, Dulcimer, Music Theory, Beginning Violin & Viola Laura Meyer received her bachelor’s degree in music with a primary emphasis in piano performance and a secondary emphasis in vocal performance from Bellarmine University. She has pursued further study at the University of Louisville and the Pennsylvania State University. Ms. Meyer has taught music to all ages since 1985 and has at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since 1996. She teaches private piano, class piano/piano laboratory, music theory, dulcimer and violin/viola. Ms. Meyer is a member of the American College of Teachers. |  | Gregory Rahming- Voice Baritone, Gregory Rahming, a native of Miami, Florida attended Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and the University of Miami in Coral Cables.
Mr. Rahming is the winner of numerous vocal competitions including the Leontyne Price Vocal Competition in Washington, D.C., the Opera Index Competition, the Young Patronesses Award of Miami, the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition and finalist in the Luciano Pavarotti Competition. He has also performed operas, concerts or contemporary music throughout the United States, including New York, Texas, Florida, Colorado, New Jersey, Alaska, Connecticut, Kentucky and Washington, D.C, and internationally in Spain, Germany, Canada, Norway, and Sweden. He currently resides in Louisville, KY and New York City.
| Benji Simmons- Rock at the Heart |  | Rozanna Thompson- Chair of Music Department, Harp Instructor Rozanna Thompson joined Sacred Heart School for the Arts in 1993. She is the chair of the music department and the Sacred Heart School for the Arts harp instructor. Ms. Thompson holds music degrees from Georgetown College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary School of Church Music. She taught piano and English in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil for two years in the Journeyman Program. Ms. Thompson added the harp to her repertoire after studying with Linda Rollo Wood of Indiana University. She plays the harp professionally with ARVS VIVA (harp/mandolin/flute) and The Underhill Trio (harp/violin/cello). Ms. Thompson has been in pit orchestras with The Broadway Series, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Music Theatre of Louisville. For 20 years, Ms. Thompson has played with The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Orchestra. She enjoys teaching harp at SHSA where her Debutante Harp Ensemble performs at an array of local functions throughout the year. | Visual Art Faculty | Suzanne Dougherty- Chair of Visual Art Department, Visual Art Instructor Suzanne Enriquez Dougherty is the chair of the visual arts department. Ms. Doughterty has been instrumental in developing the program at Sacred Heart School for the Arts since joining the faculty in 2005. She holds a bachelor of fine arts in studio art from Stanford University, has done extensive graduate study in art history at the University of New Mexico, and has studied at the renowned Art’s Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York City. An active professional artist, Ms. Dougherty has had numerous group shows throughout her career and has also helped curate a number of shows. Her extensive teaching experience ranges from preschool to college. On the Ursuline Campus, Ms. Dougherty teaches at both Sacred Heart School for the Arts and Sacred Heart Preschool. She enjoys being part of Sacred Heart Schools where she has experienced a clear commitment to bringing the best, academically and spiritually, to students. |  | Jared Hulstine- Visual Art for Preschoolers, After School Adventures in Art, Studio Session Jared Hulstine has been teaching art for the past four years in Kansas City and has just recently moved to Louisville with his wife. Mr. Hulstine graduated with a bachelor’s degree in studio art and a bachelor’s degree in education from Fort Hays State University in Kansas, and holds a highly qualified professional teaching license from the state of Kansas.
