The King Scholar Program is administered by the King Foundation for Social Justice, Inc and provides opportunities for students who possess financial need, academic potential and strong motivation to excel in life. The program was established in 1999 by Nick King and his late wife, Carol Zurkuhlen King, a graduate of the SHA Class of 1962.
In addition to maintaining high scholastic and behavioral standards, King Scholars must participate in academic, cultural and leadership enrichment activities during the school year and in the summer. The amount of financial assistance provided to the King Scholar is dependent upon financial need. In appropriate situations, it may consist of full tuition and books for the student’s four years at SHA. The program is open to all incoming ninth grade applicants who meet the program’s financial need and academic requirements.
Any 7th graderstudent interested in the King Scholar Program should contact the SHA Director of Enrollment by October, as criteria must be met prior to the student taking the High School Placement Test in December of her eighth grade year.
To be considered for the King Scholar Program,
- the student’s family must demonstrate financial need, generally earning $50,000 or less per year
- upon conclusion of the 7th grade, the student must successfully complete a three-week Summer Enrichment Program conducted by the King Foundation
- during the 8th grade, the student must successfully complete the reading and vocabulary requirements determined by the King Foundation
- the student must take the High School Placement Test at SHA in her eighth grade year and generally score in the 35th percentile or higher
