The Arts
Sacred Heart Academy has abundant opportunities for students
to pursue their interest in the arts.
Performing Arts
Sacred Heart Academy’s three choirs,
A Cappella, Performance Ensemble, and Madrigals compete locally,
regionally, and nationally. Students interested in the performing
arts may take one SHA Musical Theatre Seminar course and/or
participate in two major theater productions each year. Other
elective course offerings include piano, acting, drama and
after school private music lessons. These electives are offered
through a cooperative program on campus with Sacred Heart School
for the Arts (SHSA). As an after school activity, SHA students
may also audition for the distinguished Louisville Youth
Choir (LYC) which is artist in resident at SHSA.
In December 2009, the $4.5 million renovated
Ursuline Arts Center on Ursuline Campus will open, providing Sacred
Heart students with a modern facility in which to develop their
artistic talents. The modern arts center will include over 500
seats, an orchestra pit, a scene/prop shop and costume storage,
well-positioned seating for patrons using a wheelchair, and a spacious
atrium for receptions or art shows. Near the arts center will be
an intimate amphitheater for outdoor performances.
Visual Arts and Technology
The SHA Art, Media and Technology Wing provides resources
needed to explore and set free imagination and creativity.
In the art wing, students explore art elements, drawing, painting,
2-D and 3-D art, pottery and photography. Students have access
to a photography class room and dark room; a kiln, pottery
and sculpture area; and three art studios and gallery showplace.
Art classes are also available for IB students.
The technology department offers classes in visual arts and
communications, Desktop Publishing, Survey of Multimedia, Visual
Communication Design, TV Production and Advanced Video Studies.
Students use industry-standard software to create a variety
of projects using digital editing, photography, animation, or
other techniques.
